Fun Day!!!!!!!!!!!

TAYLOR HAIGLER ’08 AND MADDY KIEFER ‘08

In retrospect, we probably should have realized this was not going to be an average Monday. First off, the teachers were all wearing jeans and sweatshirts, which is normally only allowed on casual Fridays, and the student council was gathered in the balcony during meeting. No one really noticed this, however. We were too preoccupied with the anticipation of our new courses.

Students came to school expecting to receive the exams that they failed, grudgingly start third term classes and get hours and hours of homework. But to everyone’s excitement, IT WAS FUN DAY!!!

Before this was revealed, we sat in suspense while Mr. Manning lamented the loss of his ‘stolen strawberries’ and the punishment that the perpetrator would suffer. After Clay Marsh ‘09 and Sam O’Reilly ’09 were interrogated and snitched on Michael Manning ‘09, Peter Wilmot ’08 informed the student body that it was all a hoax. Instead of reluctantly beginning our third term classes, we were treated to 45 minutes of BAGELS and CAPRI SUNS and then shuttled to Quincy and Somerville for 3 hours of INTENSE CANDLE PIN BOWLING. We enjoyed the funtivities while eating BAG LUNCHES and drinking WATER! We returned to school to watch the faculty TRUMP the seniors in a volleyball match, but they fought hard. Overall, it was a great start to senior slump… I mean… spring term.

Social Action Day encourages students to make a difference

On Wednesday January 16, and Thursday January 17, Beaver honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. On Wednesday, alumni, parents, and students ran workshops that discussed international aid and relief work, social action at college, homeless services, community organizing, youth empowerment, public service and politics, child advocacy, peace work, and civil rights. The focus of the workshops was to show students how they can better the lives of others in simple ways and how to become more involved in their community.

The all school assembly began with alumni Eve Chayes Lyman ’69 speaking about what she has done to help her community and the world. She has taken several trips to Afghanistan and taken pictures of the struggles that the children endure there. After this, Mr. Principe discussed how in the past few years we have “moved away from focusing on the ‘hero’ legacy of Dr. King and other Civil Rights leaders.” He also spoke about, “finding those in our own community who honor the social action legacy of Dr. King and others by choosing … to make an impact and difference in the lives of others every day.”

Earlier in the week, during advisory, middle and upper school students were asked to think about people in their lives who have honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, not big names in the media, but rather, people who have simply made a difference in the lives of others. All the responses were handed in and several students and faculty members were asked to present their ideas in All School Meeting. Among the students and teachers chosen were Henry Moorhead '10, Amani Hayes Messinger '14, Valerie Leung '11, Danielle Bynoe '10, Mr. Clippinger, Kendall Dardy-Jones '11, Josh Jick '08, Nolan Flaherty '13, Jessye Crawford '08, Ms. Nickerson, Ms. Winston, Tiesha Pough '11, and Josh Carney '14. Some of the students and teachers spoke about people very close to them, and others talked about people they have heard of in their community. Overall, this was a very successful week, and hopefully Social Action Day and the assembly motivated students to become more active in their communities.

Talent Show looks to become a Beaver tradition

On Thursday, November 15th, the Beaver student body packed into Bradley Hall to come to Beaver’s first annual Talent Show. Organized by members of student council, this talent show was admittedly an attempt to increase Beaver’s insufficient school spirit. Initially, the organizers for the show were concerned about the level of success the show would bring, primarily because not many people signed up. However, after the performances, freshman class treasurer Kirsten Gute said, “It went really well; it was really enjoyable to watch. We did an awesome job organizing this!” Beaver’s spirit was definitely raised as they watched peers, classmates, friends, and even a teacher, participate in a variety of different talents.

While the whole school attended, only upper school students partook in the show. Such talents varied from Nat Harrington ’10 chanting twelve lines from the Iliad, Aeneid, and the Odyssey, to Raina Jacques ’09, singing a beautiful version of I Know Who Holds Tomorrow. Theo Norton ’08 impressed the crowd with some neat yo-yo tricks, while Ben Jacobson ’09, Ben Patten ’09, and math teacher Kevin Bau rocked out on the bass and drums to The Beatles. During the show Bau comically stated that, although it was a student talent show, he felt like a “student of life.” Emcee Sam Packard ’08 got the crowd laughing with some jokes while students ran into technical difficulties.

In the end, however, Jeff Higgins ’08 walked away with a $100 Visa gift card for his outstanding piano composition entitled "Exceptional Life," dedicated to the memory of Alex Cohn ’07, who passed away last year. He also dedicated the song to other students from his old school, who died in the past few years. This talent show was a great success, and student council is looking forward to planning another one next year to start a Beaver tradition.
